Outfit Inspiration: Be a Street Style Superstar

Fashion Week is in full swing now, and that means two things: 1. we’re all going to see things walk the runways that’ll make us ache with need and 2. the street style staples will be out in full force. Susie Lau and her best friends will all be out to spot their favorite pieces, but what they’ve got on their own backs is also sure to get as much attention as the collections themselves. Lau and her ilk are known for wearing traffic-stopping combinations of colors and patterns, straight-from-the-runway pieces and one-of-a-kind creations made just for them. Trends? Stack ’em up. Colors? Wear ’em all or wear none at all. Practicality? Throw it out the window. The idea is to stand out but not look like you’re actually trying — it’s a fine balance — but when you get it right, you’ll look like a star.

Having witnessed firsthand the type of frenzy that follows Lau, we can say that there’s an almost insatiable sense of voyeurism is wanting to see what the top bloggers are wearing. So if you want to steal a few snapshots away from the best of them, we’ve got our picks and strategies that you can use to put together a look that’s sure to earn more than just a few likes on Instagram.

There are two strategies to dressing for street style: wear something from a huge designer that’s instantly recognizable (something like Prada’s fur coats with faces on them or a gleaming lamé frock from Lanvin) or you can wear something from an obscure, under-the-radar label that’s just showy enough to catch the attention of photographers. Whatever you wear, it has to be covetable and preferably, from this current season. We’ve found the Vreeland Floral-print Cotton-blend Skirt ($835) from Australian brand Ellery — it comes from down under and is still under-the-radar — that’s got classic lines and an edgy twist. What looks like just a simple floral A-line skirt has a dramatic slit that reveals a mini underneath and some hip pockets that are great for stashing your notebooks and iPhone backup battery. It’s still in Moda Operandi’s trunk show, so if you grab it now, you’ll get it before anyone else and you can take all the credit for finding this label first.

Available at Moda Operandi.

1. Stacking trends? Stack necklaces, too. J. Crew’s Crystal Venus Flytrap Necklace ($88) and Crystal Nouveau Necklace ($128) are great statement pieces that’ll work this season and the next (and you’ll wear them long after, too). Wear them together like Anna herself if you’re feeling bold.

2. There’s a blizzard brewing this year, so stay warm with the J. Crew Collection Leather-front Merino Sweater ($298). Pairing something super feminine such as a floral skirt with this athletic-inspired top is a great contrast that will get you noticed.

3. Make a statement with every step you take by slipping into the Marni Jeweled Satin Platform Sandal ($1,230). Wear them with socks for a look straight from the runway (and to stay warm).

4. We’ve listed a few big ticket items, but you don’t have to spend a lot to stand out (it helps, though). Backpacks are one of the biggest bag trends we’ve seen, so grab one from ASOS in a bright color, such as the Leather Fold-Up Backpack ($111) and it’ll stand out against all your coats and sweaters.

5. As a blogger, there’s nothing more important than having your tech at hand (well, looking good is a big part of it, too), so stay warm and keep your fingers free with the Club Monaco Lena Faux-fur Cashmere Gloves ($39). They’re a little Fendi, a little Altuzarra and will get you noticed every time you send a text.
