Outfit Inspiration: Jamie Chung’s Print Mixing Master Class

When Banana Republic announced its collaboration with Marimekko, we naturally got drawn into the summer-ready prints and colorful dresses, but we knew that the collection’s crown jewel would be the oversized dot-print skirt. One of the first celebs spotted in the collection was Jamie Chung, Hangover actress, fashion week front row-regular and designer darling. She paired the skirt with an eye-catching combo of bright colors and print-on-print, and she reaped the rewards, because it was a memorable outfit that definitely made us look twice.

Print mixing can be challenging, but Chung showed everyone that the easiest way to do it is to keep colors similar. With her mostly black-and-white outfit, she let the prints play off each other, and instead of clashing colors, our eyes were drawn to the scale of each print and how great they worked together. Add a dash of color so you don’t look like you’re straight out of The Artist and you’ve got a great summer outfit that’ll make you look like a mix master.

Naturally, the Banana Republic Marimekko Collection skirt that Jamie Chung picked out was one of the pieces that sold out first as soon as the collection hit stores and debuted online. You can try your luck and hope for a restock of the statement skirt, but we’ve found the Basler Polka Dot Skirt ($450), which swaps out the big dots for smaller ones, which lets you play with scale in a whole different way. We love that you can wear it with just a simple tank or button-down shirt or dress it up with a metallic shell and a statement necklace.

Available at Bloomingdale’s.

1. We’ve swapped the larger dots from Chung’s Banana Republic skirt and moved them up north with the ModCloth Meet at the Malt Shop Top ($34.99). You’re still getting the same eye-catching print-on-print look, just switched around.

2. Classic aviators never go out of style, but we’re playing up this outfit’s retro vibe with exaggerated shades. Try the Ray-Ban Cat-Eye Wayfarers ($155) for vintage touch without veering into costume territory.

3. If you’re going to splurge on a bag, make it something classic such as the Saint Laurent Cassandre Clutch ($995). It’s one of the few pieces that still boasts the old Yves Saint Laurent logo and with it’s simple shape and bright lipstick-red shade, you’ll wear it for years to come.

4. And to up the feminine factor of this outfit’s fit-and-flare silhouette, try a girly shoe such as the Kate Spade New York Laurette Pointed Toe d’Orsay Pumps ($350), which adds sexy cutouts and sheer panels to an already vampy shape.
