Outfit Inspiration: Taylor Swift’s Downtown Vintage

Taylor Swift’s been hitting the red carpet in the past few weeks (her Oscar de la Renta Met Gala gown emergency seemed to turn out just fine, cat and all), but her off-duty looks have been impressing us just as much as her dresses. Swift was spotted in New York City blending a few vintage pieces with a couple of on-trend summer staples.

Swift’s perfect blend of downtown, borrowed-from-the-boys cool has us all re-thinking summer dresses and white lace frocks for the impending heat waves of summertime. And the best part of this cool, casual look is that you probably have a few of these pieces already. Just add in a pair of summer-ready scalloped shorts and pull out your ’90s go-tos and you’ll look like you’re a part of Taylor’s Instagram inner circle.

Hue Boutique Tall & Skinny Cushioned Knee Socks

Knee socks had their heyday in the ’90s, but like a few of that decade’s key trends (overalls and skorts, anyone?), they’re coming back. Channel Taylor and Clueless‘ Cher Horowitz with the Hue Boutique Tall & Skinny Cushioned Knee Socks ($8). Just like your ’90s classics, these socks have a slight rib and will add a touch of sweet, good girl to any of your favorite shoes. Paired with creepers or Doc Martens, you’ll be a grunge goddess. Do like Taylor and wear them with vintage inspired oxfords and you’ll be more Zooey Deschanel than Rob Zombie. Hue’s blend of stretch and comfortable cotton give plenty of cushion in your shoes and keep these socks from sliding down your legs.

Available at Bloomingdale’s.

1. Taylor’s channeling a cool, downtown vibe by combining choice accessories with classic pieces. Try finishing your look with the River Island Dark Red Fedora ($44) for a dash of daring color.

2. Chambray’s been a huge trend for both guys and girls for a few years, but skip out on preppy standbys and go for something a little more lived in, such as the Madewell Perfect Chambray Ex-Boyfriend Shirt in Ferrous Wash ($69.50) and you’ll be more Brooklyn than Sunday brunch.

3. Finding the perfect pair of shorts is an ongoing battle for most, but we think that the sweet, feminine details on the Topshop Tall Black Scallop Hem Shorts ($64) might just mean that your quest for cute shorts is over.

4. Taylor’s bag has vintage details such as a framed closure and ladylike top handle, but if you want instant gratification and a bag that comes without that vintage smell, try the Kate Spade New York Astor Row Palermo ($428), which combines throwback details with modern day interior organization pockets.

5. You might already have some oxford booties, but update your favorite go-to shoe with a desert bootie. The Paul Green “New York” Lace Up Platform Booties ($330) take the best parts of the menswear staple (a suede upper and a classic chukka silhouette) and adds a feminine heel that you can wear with or without knee socks.
