West Elm Teams with Steven Alan for Home Collection

New York-based designer Steven Alan has become synonymous with a certain brand of nonchalant dressing. It’s dressed up and dressed down, preppy but subversive, buttoned up but relaxed — just take a look at his signature item: a dress shirt with a reverse seams, a slim fit and a twisted button placket for a glimpse into his design ethos. This year, he expanded his company, which already includes standalone stores across the country, to include a line of home goods (and a standalone home store). But since not all of his fans have access to his stores, he’s teamed with West Elm for a line of home goods — dubbed Steven Alan Stripes — that will give design mavens everywhere a chance to get a piece of his signature style.

“I wanted the collection to feel organic and modern at the same time,” said Steven Alan. “So I combined a color palette of earth tones with a clean design. It’s refreshing to find handcrafted items in a world of mass-production.”

The megastore teamed with Alan for an entire range of bedding, furniture and home accents. The collection was inspired traditional techniques from all around the world, including a trip that Alan took with West Elm’s president, Jim Brett, to India. Together, they toured artist colonies to source fabrics and more for the collaboration. Rugs and bedding are created in India in partnership with Eco Tasar and other artist cooperatives to blend Alan’s modern designs with heirloom weaving techniques. Eco Tasar’s creations for the collab include variegated wool rugs and hand-blocked silk-blend pillows.

“We were excited to make pieces in such a low-tech way,” adds Alan.

Fans of Steven Alan ready-to-wear can expect a few of the brand’s signatures to carry over to this collection. Stripes abound on patchwork pillowcases, duvet covers and other bedding — it’s even on items such as vases and bowls created with a team in Nicaragua. The collection also includes rugs and more that draw on the traditions of craftsmanship in Haiti, India and Nicaragua. Haitian furniture makers Caribbean Craft, a Port-au-Prince-based collective of  papier-mâché artisans, created side tables for the collection that are airy, light and made entirely of recycled materials. Together, the collection creates an easy, lived-in look that’s the hallmark of Alan’s designs. Sun-faded colors, bright pops of preppy red and blue and hand-hewn details make this the perfect home collection for Alan’s die-hard fans and anyone looking to create a cozy, comfortable home.

The collaboration is available now at West Elm stores nationwide and on West Elm’s website.
