What do you do if you discover you have an uncanny resemblance to a fascinating Hollywood fashion icon? Well, if you’re actress Susan Claassen you naturally decide to become her.
Claassen has been channeling legendary Hollywood costume designer Edith Head for the past eight years in sold-out performances for “A Conversation With Edith Head,” the show she stars in and co-wrote with Paddy Calistro. The show, which is in its last weekend at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, is based on the book of the same name written by Edith Head and Callistro and offers a witty, intimate glimpse of the iconic Hollywood design diva who helped define red-carpet glamour and earned her own star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
Head, who worked for six decades as a costume designer, received 35 Academy Award nominations and won an unprecedented eight Oscars. Her last film was Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, the film noir parody with Steve Martin.
Claassen has received raves for the performance, which has shown everywhere from Houston to London, Edinburgh and Tucson, where she has lived since 1972 and is the Managing Artistic Director of the Invisible Theatre.
If you’re in Los Angeles, swipe on some scarlet lipstick and go have a little tête-à-tête with Edith. This is the last weekend to catch it!
