Take a Sniff of Sephora’s Sensorium

According to statistics, the American market is falling out of love with fragrance (the team here at FTD can’t really figure out why, since we’ve got at enough bottles to scent the entire Rose Parade). NPD Beauty Track, a market research group, even reported that over 2 million women have stopped using perfume altogether. These atrocities must end! So Sephora teamed with Firmenich, the world’s premiere fragrance production company, to create The Sensorium: Lucid Dreams from the Sensory World, an immersive exhibit to get America back into the spray-and-step-through groove.

Open through November 27th, the dynamic six-stage interactive exhibition starts with sensory deprivation so that you’ll know just how important the sense of smell is. There’s a lollipop experiment will show you just how linked it is to all your other senses. After a brief history of fragrance, you’ll discover the way you interact with scent every day, even if you don’t notice it. And a Firmenich mini-lab demonstrates how molecules are extracted and blended so precisely that even the simplest smell can evoke intense emotion.

After you get a sense of the science behind scent, you’ll be taken to a climactic “dream-like state,” where your brain can take in different fragrances and you’ll be able to experience uninhibited, instinctual, primal emotions that can be brought up through scent-memory and association. Sound too lofty? It might just be, but get through that and you’ll be able to try a “scent tasting” at the Fragrance Bar. Taking sniffs from unbranded wine glasses, you’ll explore your likes and dislikes without being swayed by marketing, beautiful bottles (our vice) and provocatively writhing models. It lets you choose via emotion, not branding, so you’ll know that your scent really is an evocative experience and not brand loyalty.

After that long journey together, you’ll know that whatever you choose is truly meant to be. With emotions running high and your instincts making all the decisions, you might just find the right scent to rekindle your love affair with fragrance.

The Sensorium is open to the public through November 27th. The $15 admission is completely redeemable towards fragrance purchases at the Sensorium, any Sephora store and Sephora.com.

The Sensorium is located at 414 West 14th Street, in New York City. For more information, call 1-877-SEPHORA or log onto www.sephora.com.
