Cool-girl designer Marissa Webb stepped down after just 18 months as the creative director at Banana Republic. While she’s still staying on to consult for the San Francisco-based heritage brand, it’ll be tough to see the brand’s presentations without her unique styling tricks, bold colors and quirk. But the show must go on, as they say, and Banana Republic is taking things back to basics. That doesn’t mean just humdrum slacks and button-up shirts, however. The BR team offered up a collection of French-inflected pieces that’ll inject anyone’s wardrobe with a little bit of Gallic flair.

VP of design Michael Anderson took his team to Lyon, Provence, and Paris. They may have checked out the sights and sounds, but they were focused on the way that real French men and women dressed. Banana Republic’s male shoppers can expect to find striped mariniere stripes on knits and turtlenecks as well as thick, chunky jackets in wool or leather. There were a few military details, such as a bomber silhouette and a palette of navies and olives, but there were also plenty of sportif details on offer without heading into true athleisure territory.

On the women’s side of the store, ladies will be able to get their own Breton stripes and pair them with midi skirts, sailor pants and skirts and statement outerwear. To wit, there were minty toppers, wide portrait collars, trenches in every shape and size (long, short, cropped, shrunken and oversized). There was even a beret on offer. There was a focus on accessories, too, with a bag paired with almost every look. Banana Republic is adding to its lineup (which may already feel bloated to some) with clutches, crossbodies, and more, offering up something for any occasion and every look. Without Webb at the helm, there’s no predicting exactly where Banana Republic is going, but with a polished and clean collection like this, shoppers can get excited for what’s to come.
