Monday Muse: L.A.’s Brock Collection Goes Luxe For Fall

Last year, Laura Vassar and Kristopher Brock, the husband-and-wife team behind Brock Collection, won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. It seems that the injection of cash and professional guidance helped the line grow up. In its first showing since the big win, Brock Collection incorporated new materials, shapes, and a more sophisticated mood for fall 2017.

For a line known for coats and separates, fall 2017 saw a move to cocktail dressing and even a few gowns — a first for the line. The materials skewed sophisticated, with mink stoles, full-length furs, luxe knits, and plush corduroy. There were prints, too. Soft lilac and cozy neutrals grounded the collection. But the line’s known for shirting and denim too. Vassar insists that customers will find plenty of that in stores, but for the runway show, she and her husband showed the special pieces.

Critics said that there might be too much fur on show, since contemporary labels skew trendy, making fur out of reach for many of their customers. But there were plenty of options to love, too. Red, the color of love, according to the designers, made several flashy appearances, as did a slew of skirts in varying lengths. Celebs like Jessica Alba and Rihanna have closets full of Brock Collection outerwear, but if they’re looking to stock up on new options, fall has off-the-shoulder topcoats in warm and cozy oatmeal and beige. Boring? No, but someone like Rihanna would definitely opt for the fur, right?

It doesn’t seem like the line is experiencing any growing pains. And this latest showing, which pushes clients into new territory while keeping the line’s laid-back luxury ethos alive will surely attract a slew of new fans. And the hometown heroes are returning — Vassar and Brock recently relocated back to Newport Beach, where Vassar grew up, and established a design studio in Downtown L.A. Welcome home, you crazy kids.
