There were two takeaways from the latest outing from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Elizabeth and James. One, the designers are honing in on one-piece dressing. No, it’s not about jumpsuits, the designing duo offered long, flowing maxi shapes in both long-sleeved and tank versions that made an entire outfit as easy as slipping into a dress. That’s not revolutionary, but offering up the dresses in sunglasses-necessary orange and bold, bright pink were definitely new. The second major point? Vintage. Anyone with even a passing knowledge of the twins know that they’ve got an amazing collection, but for spring 2018, everyone can get in on the action.
For the lookbook, the Olsens included vintage pieces mixed into the new collection. It wasn’t to tease shoppers, it was to give the new clothes more life. After all, this is how shoppers will actually wear the clothes, so it makes sense to show them that way. In a boon to fans everywhere, the vintage pieces will be shipped out with E&J spring 2018, so Bergdorf Goodman shoppers and anyone that frequents the Grove location will get a chance to snag them, too.
RELATED: Elizabeth and James Goes Minimal
As for the mainline clothes, Elizabeth and James has embraced athluxury. Wide-leg silhouettes came in pants and loose, track-inspired tops that were done in luxe fabrics and detailed with more feminine additions like ruffles and ruching. Paired with pointy heels, it was a complete look for real shoppers everywhere. Many brands seem to entice customers with singular pieces instead of head-to-toe looks, but in the contemporary market, that doesn’t quite work. By giving everyone a peek at exactly how they can wear each piece, it puts the Mary-Kate and Ashley mythos firmly in reality. Knitwear was another focus for the line, which has been expanding its sweaters season after season. This time, even though the post-summer heat waves have been pounding SoCal incessantly, the pumpkin-spice fisherman’s sweaters and pouf-sleeved pullovers looked completely covetable.
