Monday Muse: Halston Heritage’s Take On Athleisure

It’s tough to imagine what Roy Halston, a designer known for Studio 54 glam and over-the-top clients like Diana Ross and Debbie Harry, would think about the prevalence of sports bras as tops and Lululemon as ready-to-wear, but the late designers label, now transformed into a contemporary assortment known as Halston Heritage, embraced the idea of athleisure for fall 2018. Creative director Marie Mazelis didn’t go full-on workout, however. Instead, she infused Halston signatures with a bit of sportif edge, making for a collection with major moments, but also a few questionable moves.

If fashion die-hards are sick of the term athleisure, it seems that actual shoppers aren’t feeling the same way. Vogue reports that there are plenty of women who are still digging the idea of adding some comfortable gym wear to their office rotations and Mazelis is wise to court those customers with this latest outing.

But it wasn’t through actual technical leggings or racerback tanks that were on display. Instead, slinky dresses in classic Halston shapes got transformed via swishy windbreaker fabric, making for a shimmering, shining assortment ready for after-dark revelry. Cocktail hour will get a dash of sporty fun with athletic-striped detailing on blouses and sweaters.

But since Mazelis wanted to appeal to a large swathe of customers, there were a few missteps. Lace and fringe didn’t really fit into the assortment of sporty cocktail frocks, but taken away from the main collection, they were standouts that are sure to resonate with women looking for something different to wear to work. More successful integration of sport styling came with sweaters paired with longer dresses and jogging pants done in luxe satin. It was tame and sedate, which seems to run contrary to Halston’s more-is-more DNA, but women browsing department store racks won’t find much to complain about thanks to the sheer scope of it all. For anyone done with athleisure, the collection included off-beat shirting, balloon sleeves, and a smattering of statement-making coats, too. Halston always championed the democratization of fashion and it seems that Mazelis is taking that sentiment to heart.
