Halston Heritage Spring 2017
For the past few seasons, ballet has been having a fashion moment. Misty Copeland made headlines and got her very own feature in Vogue. Fashion heavy-hitters have teamed up with ballet troupes for one-of-a-kind costumes. With Roy Halston Frowick’s history of working with Martha Graham on several productions, it was only a matter of time for Halston Heritage to mine that collab for a collection of its own.
Instead of looking at the strict discipline and mores of ballet, however, Halston Heritage’s Marie Mazelis looked to the organic nature and elegance of modern dance. The ballet influence came by way of color: “ballet neutrals,” Mazelis called them. The blushes, whites, and tans are certainly in line with may other brands embracing not only the world of dance, but the influence of Kanye West’s Yeezy collections. But more direct nods to dance included leggings and wrap silhouettes. Dresses and kimonos were worn with metallic leggings and the models looked like they could start their warm ups at any moment.

Loose shapes and exposed shoulders also hinted at Flashdance-era styling, as did ribbed cashmere tanks. Additionally, Halston’s Studio 54 heritage was on display via metallic bodysuits and skintight catsuits. They were shown under looser pieces, adding a layer of dance and an injection of glam to open blouses and maxi-length gowns.
In addition to the flowing silks and satins, there was a statement suede coat and plenty of accessories to flesh out a collection inspired by movement and grace. Fringe was shorn and crisscross straps on heels and sandals hinted at pointe shoes, but the underlying energy of Halston’s party girls (Pat Cleveland, Beverly Johnson, and Anjelica Huston) were still in the collection’s DNA — and that made us want to get up and dance.
