Phillip Lim has never shied away from mishmash styling. Known for adding downtown edge to feminine favorites, he’s built his business on making clothes that cool girls want to wear. They may not be the monied ladies who lunch uptown, but they look like a million bucks thanks to Lim’s mixing of tailoring and knitwear. Effortlessness, the holy grail for so many designers and shoppers, exudes from just about every Lim collection and for fall 2018, it came in spades. Mixing fabrics, tailoring, and big, chunky knits, fans will have plenty to choose from and the easy looks will find more women gravitating towards Lim’s trademark savoir-faire.

“I remember my mother making clothes from scraps of fabric,” Lim told Vogue. “I think that idea of turning discarded materials into something beautiful really speaks to the immigrant experience.”

Layers were the big story. Knit dresses done up in stripes and blocked patterns were paired with turtlenecks and long-sleeved sweaters. It was super-feminine, especially when they strode down the runway in candy colors. Some were fuzzy, others were ribbed. All were slinky and louche, but grounded with a thick-soled boot, proving that even the most femme picks could use a bit of butch.

Long lean tailoring has become a Lim go-to, as well, but he loosened that up with crinkled fabrics and baggier pants. It looked cool, plain and simple. The long coats are sure to be street-style bait when they hit stores, especially when they featured bold checks and swept the floor.

Lim’s growing lineup of bags got some time in the spotlight, too. Boxy crossbody bags and fanny packs will give even more options for Lim’s acolytes, who’ve made the Pashli and 31 hours bags a cult favorite. Ponyhair played a big role in all the shapes, making for a luxe addition for even the most avid collector.
