Monday Muse: Roberto Cavalli’s Rock Goddess

Resort season was once actually centered around resort wear, as in the sort of thing women would pack to head to St. Thomas or maybe on a cruise around the Mediterranean. Today, resort collections offer up everything from swimsuits to fur coats. What’s a brand to do when its entire ethos is built on far-flung locales, lounging in caftans and living the high life every day of the year? Embrace it. At least, that’s what happened at Roberto Cavalli’s resort 2017 presentation, where creative director Peter Dundas showed a collection of rock-inflected boho pieces that looked equal parts Coachella and Côte D’Azur.

While Roberto Cavalli has never been a sedate label, Dundas amped up everything, including embellishment, embroidery, fringe, rouching, prints, color and more. And more and more. Prints clashed, colors were bright and bold, shoes were high and everything was exaggerated. Caftans blew like ships’ sails as models sauntered around the Milanese villa that was decked out for the presentation. Skinny suits were skintight and there was nary an outfit that wasn’t decked out in floral embroidery and touches of fringe. It was a lot to take in, but it all reflected the ’70s decadence and jet-set look of the Cali’s glam rockers and the babes that toured with them.

The collection included fabric sourced from from Latin America and embroidered with Aztec motifs. Models wore stacks and stacks of intricate antique jewelry and overall, there was so much going on it was almost overwhelming. But that’s the M.O. at Cavalli, and instead of being turned off by sensory overload, we wanted more of that excess. Why not throw a fringed poncho on over a maxi-dress? Because a shrunken Western-inspired vest could work just as well? Good thing vacations last more than just one day in the real world. In Cavalli’s controlled chaos, however, every day is a reason to get away — and look pretty great while you’re doing it. Real women will have to pick and choose certain pieces to integrate into their closets, but it’s sure to be a fun process looking through this kaleidoscope of over-the-top fashion.
