Monday Muse: Rodarte Blooms At Couture

Rodarte Spring 2018

Rodarte Spring 2018

An American in Paris? What about three American brands headed to Couture Week? That’s what happened this season, with L.A.’s Rodarte sisters and Monique Lhuilier — along with NYC’s Proenza Schouler — decamping to the City of Light to show their latest collections during Couture Week. While the respective labels were showing ready to wear, Rodarte’s collections have always skirted the line between couture and RTW. The new environs allowed the sisters to go all-out, taking their already intricate designs to entirely new places by utilizing Parisian ateliers and their French savoir-faire.

The most striking part of the collection was undoubtedly the baby’s breath that was festooned on every model, whether it was in her hair, across her shoulders or sprinkled around wrists. Vogue reports that the blooms came courtesy of L.A.’s Joseph Free, who flew in for the show to style the flowers on every model. Taking something as commonplace as filler flowers and thrusting it into the sphere of couture is a very Rodarte move. In the past, the sisters have done it with chains, fishnets, and party-ready paillettes.

As for the clothes under the flowers, there were a few Rodarte classics, like motocross jackets and slim pants, were covered in tiny pearls and 3-D florals in white and cream. The colors were soft, including blushes and off-whites with hits of bold magenta and bright yellow, that the sisters claimed drew from Robert Altman’s 3 Women, which is set in California ghost towns. You can take the girls out of L.A., but they always manage to circle back somehow.

The florals were reflected in the setting, too. Inspired by classic French gardens, the models were walking through a sun-filled set that mirrored the appliques on dresses and jumpsuits. To temper the femininity of the collection, the sisters added hard-edged snakeskin boots; huge, shiny gold cuffs; and shoulder-dusting earrings. It was those details that added the special Rodarte touch, which is certainly how the sisters managed a standing ovation from the French crowd. If this stunning collection is a harbinger of things to come from the label, it seems that Paris is the perfect place for future collections.
