Tadashi Shoji’s efforts to court a younger, cooler customer has come to the forefront. During the designer’s most recent New York Fashion Week outing, the front row was filled with Hollywood’s bright young things. On the runway, the hemlines have never been shorter or looser, and the easy, breezy attitude of the clothes seemed to reflect his audience. While there were the charity doyennes and old guard ladies who lunch in attendance, there was a decidedly hipper, fresher group of new customers, too.

Shoji took inspiration from California cool and bohemian freedom this season, which allowed him to give his usually stately collection a much more youthful feel. Flowing straps, tassels, and a heavy helping of florals made for a light-as-air collection that’ll be at home during beachy kickbacks and the red carpet, too.

Vogue reports that Chloe Bennet and Camren Bicondova sat in the front row, nodding as pleats and lace paraded down the catwalk. Those were the most dramatic opening picks, but Tadashi also sent out easy-to-wear options that included slips, tea-length smock dresses in an array of pastels, and tassel-adorned dresses that will catch the flashbulbs perfectly. The sort of garden-party vibe (with tunes provided by California’s very own Beach Boys, naturally) let Shoji run amok with florals and lace, two of the signatures that his customers come back for again and again.

While there was plenty to love in Shoji’s relaxed mode — low mules were paired with just about every look — the designer didn’t abandon his red carpet roots. A finale capsule featured showstopping gowns embroidered with delicate celestial designs. While the idea’s been explored before in other labels, Tadashi’s allover print, his use of sheer shades of navy, aqua, blush and silver alon with the dramatic flowing lines made for a breathtaking finale.

While Shoji will never be known for pushing the fashion envelope, his commercial success is nothing to be dismissed. He’s celebrating 35 years at the helm of his eponymous label. Not that there was any pomp and circumstance around that, however. Tadashi let the collection speak for itself and his loyalists were sure to be seeing stars the whole time.
