While summer moviegoers have been anticipating a certain caped superhero’s big screen return last week (complete with marketing tie-ins, naturally), we’ve been eagerly awaiting Sophia Coppola’s The Bling Ring. While it might not have a superhero pedigree, it has super style pedigree. We’ve been waiting with bated breath to see just how Coppola and Stacey Battat, the film’s costume designer, would portray not only the girls (and guy) of the infamous burglary ring of twenty-somethings from the Valley that targeted young Hollywood stars they sought to emulate, but also the celeb closets that the troupe raided. The actual robberies happened in 2008, and back then there was one brand that was taking over the fashion world like a blingy blitzkrieg: Juicy Couture.

The roster of starlets that the Bling Ring visited included Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Aurdina Patridge and even Orlando Bloom. And a quick Internet search will turn up just about every single one of them (Bloom excluded) donning the uniform of the Aughts: a brightly colored Juicy Couture tracksuit, huge sunglasses and Ugg boots. The film’s trailer and promotional materials feature the Ring wearing some seriously expensive designer duds — a Birkin here, Louboutins there — but perhaps the most telling scene involves Emma Watson’s character wearing a bubblegum pink tracksuit and those ubiquitous Australian boots. There was no look that better defined the generation of MySpace, iPods and tween spirit.

Juicy Couture Resort 2014

For the brand’s latest outing, Juicy Couture took a page from their storied past. But a story like Juicy’s isn’t similar to, say, that of Ralph Lauren. Instead of digging into a past of preppy staples, the design team at Juicy Couture dug deep into their rhinestone-encrusted oeuvre and brought back some of Pam and Gela’s greatest hits. A modernized tracksuit — sans any rear-end embellishment — looked almost refreshing, especially in the trendy world of sportif designer wares. Another look, which featured a Miami-ready crochet bathing suit topped with a leopard puffer, perfectly depicted the Juicy girl. Sure, she was impractical and over-the-top, but she was also the center of attention. Juicy didn’t stray from their cheeky slogans entirely, pun-riddled one-liners still featured on pieces such as a velour baseball jacket and other pieces were embellished with gold sequins and brass studs. Would Bilson, Barton and co. come back based on this collection? We’re willing to guess they’ve got some Juicy in the back of their re-stocked closets, but the next generation of Gomez, Lovato and the like are sure to come running to this throwback collection of Couture classics.

Take the great American pastime. Add Americans love of stuff made right here in the U.S.A. Mix in Coach, an American heritage brand if there ever was one, and you have the perfect Father’s Day’s gift that will be a home run for dads everywhere. Just in time for the Dad’s day, the venerable leather goods brand is creating a limited edition collection of baseball-themed gifts.

Coach baseball mitt

The brand was started in 1941 as a small, family-run business that handmade wallets and billfolds in Manhattan. Inspired by the soft pliability of leather baseball gloves, the company began with the ethos of recreating that same broken-in leather feel in bags and more accessories as the label grew. Today, it’s one of the world’s most recognizable brands, and whether you’re walking along the Champs Elysses or in Toyko’s Ginza district, you’ll see ladies toting around Coach’s nearly indestructible bags. But as the label grew, the men’s division was always on the back burner. Until now, that is, with men’s-only stores popping up in New York’s West Village and dedicated shop-in-shops opening in Coach flagships nationwide. Guys are getting in on the brand’s legacy of leather with soft supple totes, briefcases, travel accessories and more.

Coach baseball bat

For Father’s Day, Coach is going back to its roots by offering a special collection of baseball gloves (available in seven different colors) created in collaboration with Massachusetts-based company Valkyrie. The soft leather mitts are game-ready from the get-go, meaning there’s no break in period like the Rawlings models you’ll find on shelves today. Retailing at $348, they might seem too precious to put to use, but as soon as dad slips one on, he’ll be out in the yard in no time at all. To round out the whole Normal Rockwell painting, Coach is also offering baseball bats made in collaboration with Texas-based Warstic Bat Company. The bats are hand-dipped — four colors are on offer — and feature Coach leather wrapped handles and laser-engraved detailing. At $248, they’ll be available at 11 of Coach’s locations nationwide, a much tighter distribution than the gloves, which will be on offer 128 stores worldwide.

Coach limited-edition wallet

And for dads who aren’t quite obsessed with baseball, Coach is taking actual vintage baseball mitts and creating one-of-a-kind wallets for guys who aren’t spending every day on the baseball diamond. Made from actual baseball gloves found on eBay, the heritage baseball glove billfold ($348) was offered last year, but sold out so quickly that the brand brought it back for 2013. Unlaced gloves get disassembled, flattened, cut, shaped and pieced together to form a unique wallet that’s individually stamped. Just 200 of these must-have creations are being made, so don’t hesitate if you’ve got a dad that’s all about American goods and American traditions.

Coach’s Father’s Day collection is available at select stores, including the brand’s Bleecker Street flagship, and www.coach.com.

Charlotte Tilbury is the mastermind behind many a runway show and makeup line, too. Just ask Tom Ford himself. So when it came to creating a special pop-up shop at Selfridges’ The Concept Store, there was nobody better for the job. Tilbury, who was the makeup mastermind backstage at Rachel Zoe’s first runway show, is curating House of Rock ‘n Kohl, a special event to give women’s mundane makeup routines new life and raise money for Kids Company, a British charity that sponsors mentoring for young adults.

“I can’t wait to share with every woman the power of make-up artistry that I give to models and celebrities on shoots, shows and the red carpet,” Tilbury said. “Beauty is not an exclusive club – this event gives women the insider track on my make-up tips and tricks and shares the expertise of the influencers behind the lens. It will be fun, exciting, inspiring and life-changing. I can’t wait!”

Beginning June 17, the shop will include makeup bag surgery, a pop-in service that will edit down your makeup bag to essentials. Tilbury’s team will go through your existing pouch and see if what you’ve got in tow is really what you need. They’ll recommend new items, if necessary, and you can pick them up just steps away at Selfridges Beauty Hall and Beauty Workshop. Both locations will have a special area dedicated to a curated selection of Tilbury’s favorite items from an array of different lines.

Charlotte Tilbury makeup bag

Also on the calendar are informal discussions about beauty and life with Tilbury’s famous friends. Expect to see fellow makeup artists such as Lisa Eldridge as well as Tilbury’s famous clientele. Kate Moss and model of the moment Cara Delevigne are just a few of the different names slated to make appearances. Lucky attendees will be able to snag a limited edition makeup bag. One side is decorated with kisses from some of the fashion world’s most notable, including Carine Roitfeld, Stella McCartney and Alice Temperley as well as Kate Moss and actress/model/muse Sienna Miller. Proceeds from the event will benefit Kids Company, which will provide for over 18,000 children by giving them a safe, sustainable, and reliable family environment to grow up in.

So slick on your favorite lipstick and get ready for some major lip service from one of the industry’s most beloved beauty gurus, you won’t get a chance like this again.

In honor of today’s announcement that Isabel Marant will be H&M’s newest designer collab, I’ve gathered up some of my favorite Marant picks for summer, as well as some of my favorite Marant-inspired picks as well. We know that Isabel does not take kindly to copycats (see today’s H&M story here), but we also know that not everyone can shell out for a $600 pair of booties or a $350 bikini. So, until the H&M line launches and all her fans can get their mitts on a more moyenne Marant (in price, not style, that is), our choices are original flavor or lightly seasoned with a hint of Marant. Take your pick!

Original Flavor:

Lace up those wedge sneaks and get ready for the Marant Mob!

Suit up ladies and gents. Put your fashion armor on and velcro your Isabel Marant wedge sneaks. The Marant mob is coming and you’re going to have to be nimble and ready for all manner of sartorial sword fighting come November, because H&M just announced that its newest designer collab is with French fashion darling Isabel Marant. And for the first time, Marant will create a men’s collection as well. (Be forewarned, gentlemen: H&M harpies will snap up your clothes, too!)

The collection will be available starting November 14 in about 250 stores worldwide and online and will feature clothing and accessories for women, men and teenagers.

“I am flattered by this collaboration: H&M works with the best designers and this invitation is an exciting honor,” said Marant in a statement released by H&M today. “I aim at creating something real, that women want to wear in their everyday lives, with a certain carelessness, which I think is very Parisian: You dress up, but do not pay too much attention and still look sexy. The collection is infused with this kind of easiness and attitude. Everything can be mixed following one’s own instincts: My take on fashion is all about personality.”

Isabel Marant wedge sneaker, available at Forward by Elyse Walker.

Marant’s style may be stylishly laissez-faire but her legions of fans are anything but, and you can expect them out in full force for the launch of this collab in November. The Parisian designer, who graduated from the prestigious Studio Berçot in Paris, actually launched her eponymous line in 1994 and has long had a cult following of chic fashion editors and style cognoscenti who adore her take on boho style mixed with masculine tailoring. But it was the launch of her wedge sneakers that rocketed her to the sartorial stratosphere a couple of years ago. The shoes sparked not only a massive clamoring and back-alley boutique tales of desperation to acquire the sneaks, but launched a massive footwear trend, many imitators and a legion of new fans not only for her footwear but for her ready to wear. Her clothes are routinely photographed on some of fashion’s biggest forces, from Jessica Biel to Alexa Chung, Victoria Beckham and many others.

Of all the many “admirers” who created similar versions of her sneaker and, well, ran with it, Marant told the Telegraph earlier this year that “everybody who has the wrong one looks quite bitchy, very vulgar, when mine are not at all.”

To that we say: Mme Marant, you have not truly seen bitchy and vulgar until you lay eyes upon the women clawing at your clothes in H&M this November. May the force be with us!

Slim Aarons photography

It might seem like every single season is resort for Michael Kors, who has built his fashion empire on the idea of jetsetting around the world. His campaigns are known for tan bodies, gleaming gold detailing and exotic locales such as Aspen in the winter, models blushing après-ski, and Miami Beach for the summer, aviator sunglasses gleaming in the setting sun. His latest collection includes all of his brand’s signature pieces and each and every one looks like it stepped right out of a Slim Aaron’s photograph. Kors and Aarons seem to be cut from the same cloth (perfectly wrinkled white linen, probably), especially with a collection that’s perfect for the Palm Beach and Palm Springs environs that Aarons favored.

Slim Aarons photography

Slim Aarons photography

Slim Aarons was known for his photographs of socialites, celebrities and the international jet set, which might be why Michael Kors seems to be so enamored with his work. Aarons famously stated that he was just “photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.” Why did the monied men and women from Palm Springs to Palm Beach trust him? He was no threat to them. Aarons worked as an army combat photographer, so he was used to staying on the sidelines. He let his subjects be themselves — without the help of stylists, make-up artists or a hair team — and he was just lucky enough to have subjects that were already stylish and lounging around the world’s most beautiful settings.

His photography appeared in magazines such as Town and Country, Life and Holiday. He shot as many normal people as he did celebrities, so it comes as no surprise that his photography books put men such as Clark Gable and Gary Cooper alongside great society women from both coasts. Perfectly coiffed, always beaming and seemingly living an endless vacation, Aarons’ subjects seemed to be real life birds of paradise.

Michael Kors Resort 2014

At his resort presentation, Michael Kors’ models were tan, taut and wearing everything from white bikinis to floor-length maxi gowns. Resort is the collection that stays on the sales floor the longest, so it makes sense that the breadth of the collection spanned from seasonal favorites to wear-everywhere staples. Kors presented leather coats and safari-inspired jackets alongside cut-out bathing suits, all paired with sky-high platform wedges. The colors in play included stark white and black, Aarons’ staples, along with a shot of hot pink, the exact color of the geraniums that Kors spied in so many of Aaron’s photos.

Michael Kors Resort 2014

Animal prints — a Kors staple, not an Aarons signature — were also a major part of the collection. Kors used giraffes, zebras and leopard in everything from short shorts to swimsuits (embellished to the nines, of course) as well as a floor-grazing showstopper of a caftan that’s fit for the most regal society woman sitting by her perfect azure pool. It was so light and airy that it practically begged for a vacation all its own. No matter what your plans are for the summer, there’s a Kors outfit for every fabulous affair. Martini sold separately.

To fête 80 years, the Lacoste team invited French fashion's biggest names to the party: Hermes, Goyard, Baccarat, Fauchon and more!

Lacoste New Legend 80th Anniversary polo

Oh, the French. Leave it to them to make even the most mundane things like workwear, cookies and OJ (see: mariniere sweaters, macarons and citron pressé) into everyday chic. One of the country’s biggest names is Lacoste, an international megabrand that was built on something as simple as the polo. The brand has been rockin’ the croc for 80 years now, and to celebrate, the label is calling upon its fellow French brethren to celebrate. Fashion fraternité ensued and a capsule collection of items is now available to the masses. Vive la revolution on and off the court.

Hermes for Lacoste 80th Anniversary Crocodile Bag

Goyard for Lacoste 80th Anniversary duffle

Hermès, another brand with tight ties to crocs (the skins, not the shoes), created an over-the-top tennis bag in verdant green croc skin. Sure, it’s priceless, but know that croc is one of the world’s most hardy skins — those guys are exposed to everything from swamp people to endless downpours, after all — so whether you throw it around your tennis club or the TSA manhandles it, it’ll last a lifetime.

Not to be outdone, Goyard created a carryall, too. But in lieu of the normal initials, they emblazoned their tennis-ready duffle (in classic tennis white, naturally) with the brand’s signature emblem. We’re already salivating over these luxe beauties but, sadly, they’re not going into production. (C’mon, what’s better than a storied French brand and one of fashion’s most accessible luxury labels?) This part of the collab, along with a few other pieces from Boucheron, Baccarat and more, are going straight into the Lacoste company archives.

Fauchon for Lacoste 80th Anniversary eclairs

Baccarat for Lacoste 80th Anniversary crystal bowl

You can, however get a few other pieces of the collection, including a set of eclairs from French bakery Fauchon. Known for artful spins on classic eclairs, it’s become an institution across the Atlantic and the company counts fashion editors, designers and normal folk alike among its legion of loyal fans. Baccarat created a crystal bowl for the occasion, using Lacoste’s signature green combined with the icy-clear crystal that the brand is know for. Other brands that got in on the fun include S.T. Dupont (pens and a lighter), Veuve Cliquot (champagne), and Bernardaud (golf tees), among others.

In addition to these collectibles, which will be created in limited editions of 80 pieces each and be available by special order in Lacoste boutiques worldwide, there will be a separate collection consisting of tees, shoes, glasses, watches, jewelry and polo shirts designed by British art director Peter Saville and emblazoned with a special kaleidoscope logo. His resumé includes designing record covers for Joy Division and designing the uniforms for the English National Football (that would be soccer to us) team. Look for that collection in Lacoste stores everywhere as well as on the backs of the brand’s fans all over the globe.

A few years ago, it was all about going big. Bags got bigger and bigger, shoulders started to grow and shoes were beginning to take on new heights. We saw celebs being weighed down by huge Gucci horsebit hobos, Chloé’s iconic Paddington boasted a three-pound padlock and Vuitton’s Neverfull encouraged ladies to pack it on in. Recently, Alexander Wang’s Rocco Bag has been tipping shoulders and scales alike thanks to its rows of heavy studs and even Marc Jacobs needed to revamp his Stam bag with a hollow chain handle to shave a few lbs off of its heft. But this season, we’re all breathing a sigh of relief as this handbag trend downsizes. Designers are releasing mini-mi versions of their iconic creations and, in some cases, throwing in a cross-body strap for — gasp! — convenience. High fashion that actually functions? Believe it.

Reed Krakoff Micro Atlantique Tote

Reed Krakoff is known for his beautifully crafted bags, but if you’ve seen one in person and handled one of his signature Atlantique totes, you know that they’re heavy even when they’re empty (thanks to a removable pouch, full leather construction and layer upon layer of stiff hide). Part of the appeal, though, is the organization that you get within all that space. For his Micro Atlantique ($990), Krakoff didn’t change a thing apart from the size of the bag. It’s still go the outside pockets and minimal hardware that’s made him a go-to for modern minimalists.

Dimensions: Approximately 6 x 7 inches. Original size: 12 x 13 inches.

Louis Vuitton Mini Icons Alma

Last season, Vuitton released smaller versions of the famous Alma bag (originally designed for Coco Chanel herself) in bright, candy colors rendered in their shiny Epi and Vernis leathers. This season, they’re continuing the Mini Icons line with exotic skins and even more colors. The pint-sized bags ($1,380 and up) come with coordinating shoulder straps, too, which means they’re easier to handle than their full-sized counterparts. They’ve still got every little detail, however, including miniaturized feet, perfectly proportioned zipper pulls and even petit padlocks just like their big sisters.

Dimensions: 9.8 x 7.5 inches. Original size: 11 x 15 inches.

Newly minted CFDA Award Winner for Accessories Design Phillip Lim recently released his blogger-beloved Pashli Satchel in a smaller size, too. Not to be outdone by huge accessories designers, he’s shrunken his Pashli down to size so you can keep your hands free while you browse his ready to wear. (Lim is known more for his clothes than his accessories, but that division of his namesake label is growing more and more every season.) Like the original, it’s available in an array of colors, solids and two-tone models, and every single one can expand effortlessly with the pull of two zippers. So if the other bags are just a bit too small, know that this one has room to grow.

Dimensions: 6.5 x 8.25 inches. Original size: 11.5 x 14.5 inches.

Models off duty, A-list celebs and more all flock to Givenchy’s slouchy carryall, the Nightingale. But we can tell that even the most practiced handbag carriers have trouble with the bag’s short handles, cumbersome (maybe even decorative) longer handle and unstructured shape. Set this baby down and you’ve got a puddle of a purse that’s only marginally as chic as it was when it was in your hand. The smaller size ($1,400) — as seen on Rosie Huntington Whiteley’s petite frame — takes all of the bag’s trademarks and gives you a much more manageable size. It’s also got a functioning cross-body strap (Whiteley has it removed) like the other options in its small sized clan.

Dimensions: 6 x 12.5 inches. Original size: 15 x 24 inches.

Available at Barneys New York.

Céline Nano Luggage Tote

Hands down, the most popular and covetable bag of the last few seasons has been Phoebe Philo’s Céline Luggage Tote. We’ve seen it from coast to coast in ever color and color combination imaginable on girls and guys alike. (New York Fashion Week attracts a very different crowd than the Brentwood Country Mart, trust us.) The cumbersome bag may be a beautiful sight to behold, but holding it means lugging around a huge handbag that’s almost too wide to sling up onto your shoulder. That’s why we love the Nano model ($2,700) even more because the robot-face that we all fell in love with is even cuter when rendered in a smaller size. (Note: The original is called the Shoulder size, ironically.) Throw in the convenience of a bag that doesn’t weigh a ton and you’ve got a winner on all fronts. We love all of our bags, great and small, but sometimes you’ve just got to lighten your load.

Dimensions: 8 x 8 inches. Original: 15 x 15 inches.

Colleen Atwood accepts the Board of Director’s Tribute at the 2013 CFDA Awards

For the first time in its history, the CFDA honored a costume designer at their annual awards ceremony. The honoree? One of the biggest names in Hollywood: Colleen Atwood. And though you won’t ever see her get top billing on a blockbuster ad anytime soon, her work, which spans decades and genres alike, is almost instantly recognizable.

Every year, the CFDA chooses an individual to receive the Board of Director’s Tribute, a special award that has been given to the likes of First Lady Michelle Obama (2009), Tom Ford (2004) and posthumously awarded to Alexander McQueen (2010). Previously, awards were given for Lifetime Tribute, Industry Tribute and more, but the awards roster was cleaned up and the first Board of Director’s Tribute Award was handed out in 2003.

Atwood is the first costume designer to receive the award, but even before she clutched Trova, the CFDA Award statuette, her resumé already bore the marks of a movie industry veteran. She’s earned three Oscars for her work on Alice in Wonderland, Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha; numerous BAFTA Awards, many Costume Designers Guild Awards, Emmy awards and more.

Edward Scissorhands

Memoirs of a Geisha

Atwood’s body of work is marked by complex, layered costuming — she’s had a longstanding relationship with Tim Burton, known as one of the movie industry’s most meticulous directors. From her work on Edward Scissorhands to Dark Shadows and Alice in Wonderland, she’s shown that she can go goth, but gaily. But it’s not just the world of Tim Burton that has her stretching her creative muscles. Period pieces, such as Chicago and even Memoirs of a Geisha required Atwood to work within certain boundaries, whether she was glamming up Roxy Hart’s fantasy dance sequences while still retaining the film’s historical accuracy or delving into the near-impenetrable world of Japanese geisha.

Catherine Zeta Jones in Chicago

Renee Zellweger in Chicago

For her next act, Atwood moved away from the silver screen — though we know she won’t be gone for too long — and onto the Big White Way with the Broadway debut of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Truman Capote’s beloved novella took the stage, with Emilia Clarke — better known as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones – playing the role of Holly Golightly. And Atwood took the responsibility of outfitting one of the most iconic women in showbusiness.

Emilia Clarke as Holly Golightly

Atwood didn’t remix the famous Hubert de Givenchy evening gown, however, because the play took Holly back to the ’40s, where the novella is originally set, instead of the swinging ’60s of the Hepburn film. Instead, Atwood focused the attention away from the fashion to the play’s slightly edgier take on Golightly.

“Holly herself has more of an edge, I think. She’s much sexier in a less sleek fashion-y way,” said Atwood. And by less fashion, she means that instead of big designers such as Givenchy, Atwood is putting the focus on Holly’s character — she who parties and entertains gentlemen, not the Hollywood Holly with her glam getups and perfectly coifed hair.

Colleen Atwood sketches for Breakfast at Tiffany’s

“I really wanted to capture the youth of the time and how the energy of the young people all coming to New York to make their way during the war years,” Atwood said in an interview. “Girls going shopping for a dress for the night and entertaining men in ways that weren’t really spoken about. It’s just got a little more of an edge to it.”

And while the play ended its run, Atwood is also splitting her time between a ballet in San Francisco and, of course, working on feature films and television shows — and getting more and more award nominations in the mean time.

Borrow from the boys. That’s what fashion mags — and just about every rom-com we can think of — tell you to do. But wearing a white oxford shirt without much else when you’re, say, going to the office, might raise a few eyebrows. So instead of snagging his button up, try grabbing for one of these bags instead. We think they’re perfect for gifting your dad or any guy in your life, but we won’t tell if you can’t resist and snag one for yourself.

Ben Minkoff Vintage Nikki messenger

Rebecca Minkoff’s men’s spinoff label, Ben Minkoff, has flown under the radar since its inception, but guys in the know (and every Minkette’s boyfriend) come to the label for bags inspired by military-issue goods. The Nikki messenger is one of the label’s most popular models, but we know a fair amount of ladies who would gladly tote this schoolboy-inspired satchel as an everyday bag. It’s got room for everyday essentials along with pockets inside and out. And we’re just going to say it: “Strong enough for a man, made for a …” Well, you know how the saying goes!

Coach hasn’t been known for doing many collabs in its woman’s line, but as for the guys, the American label has been collab-happy for the last few seasons. Krink, the street artist, has painted Coach classics with his signature dripping paint and before him, über-popular artist Hugo Guiness scribbled a few sketches onto wallets, totes and tech accessories. This year, Coach has partnered with French brand Saint James (Picasso was a fan) for a capsule collection of nautical-inspired necessities. We think the Breton stripes look best on the oversized tote, which will hold everything from his beach essentials to work necessities. It’s being marketed to the guys, but nobody will bat an eye if this is swinging from your shoulder in sunny St. Tropez or your daily commute.

Cool girls in L.A. know that Clare Vivier is the brand to go to for cute clutches, but the brand has just introduced their very first guy’s bag: the Adam’s Duffle. It’s made from sturdy canvas, but it’ll hold its shape thanks to a bottom crafted from Clare Vivier’s signature leather. It’s available in three different colors, but we love the all-American red, white and blue, especially when it’s monogrammed. And while monogramming your guy’s initials on his bag might make it a little more difficult to use for your everyday gym needs (or weekend essentials), think of it as a grown-up varsity jacket and show off those initials for the world to see.
