Outfit Inspiration: Rashida Jones’ Bold, Gold Lanvin Jumpsuit

This year, the Los Angeles charity the Foundation for Living Beauty hosted a charity fashion show to celebrate three years of helping women coping with cancer. The event, which was the West Coast debut of Lanvin’s Pre-fall 2014 collection, drew big names such as Jennifer Morrison, FTD fave Emma Roberts and Emmy Rossum as well as Rashida Jones, who wore an embellished, embroidered, metallic Lanvin jumpsuit. Sound like fashion overkill? Thanks to a chic, cropped tuxedo jacket, Jones tempered the over-the-top outfit with just the right amount of personal flair that we’ve come to expect from the off-kilter fashion fan.

And while we don’t think a metallic jumpsuit would fly at the office, it’s a great option for a party, which is why we’re taking our favorite parts of the outfit, namely the rich textures and cool, borrowed-from-the-boys look, and giving them a more wearable remix. So give your LBD a break and instead, opt for some shimmy and shine next time you’re headed out after dark.

What we love most about Jones’ outfit is that she paired a flashy, metallic jumpsuit with a menswear staple: the tuxedo jacket. Only instead of opting for something expected, such as an au courant boyfriend fit, she chose a short, cropped version. Get the same look with the Topshop Cara Open Front Crepe Jacket ($110), which has the same short length and masculine inspiration. Push the sleeves up, throw it on over just about anything and you’ll be giving cocktail hour a whole new look. And if you’re the type that always gets a little flushed after a few cocktails, it’s the perfect thing to toss over your shoulders — fashion editor and blogger style — to stay warm without weighing you down.

1. Gold from top to bottom might be a little too disco for mere mortals, but if you’re looking for eveningwear with flair, focus on texture. The Kate Moss for Topshop Lamé Tuxedo Pants ($160) are comfortable and cool, plus they’ve got a metallic sheen that mirrors Jones’ Lanvin jumpsuit without veering into Liberace territory.

2. If you’ve got a jacket on, you can have a little fun with what’s underneath. Just like Jones’ peek of embroidery, having just a taste of the Enza Costa Coated Hologram Tank ($150) show through is just enough to add interest to a look without blinding other partygoers.

3. Not everyone has access to Lanvin’s statement embroidery — or even the brand’s statement necklaces — but something simple such as the Baublebar Jumbo Cuban Links ($44) can make a big statement without any bling at all. The jumbo, exaggerated necklace is all you need when the rest of your outfit sparkles.

4. Jones paired her Lanvin with strappy, vintage-inspired heels. Go classic with the Reiss Open Toe Evening Sandals ($265), which have a great ’20s feel and a heel that’s tall enough to look great with cropped pant and all of your cocktail dresses without reaching vertigo-inducing heights.
