Horror is big business in Los Angeles, where every major theme park hosts throngs of thrill seekers for themed experiences each fall, and creepy, haunted tours are packed year round. Thanks to Amazon Prime, the hottest location this year is Lore, a haunting experience from the minds of Creep LA, based on the Amazon Prime Exclusive Series of the same name and the wickedly popular podcast that spawned it all. And, the best part:  You can still get your creep on with Lore even after Halloween is over.

I braved Lore with a small handful of other thrill-seeking souls and it was, without a doubt, the most memorable, boundary-pushing live horror experience of my life.

For the uninitiated, Lore began as an award-winning podcast about true life scary stories. Creator Aaron Mahnke grew a massive fanbase — 5 million monthly listeners on average — by exposing the darker side of history, exploring the creatures, people, and places of our wildest nightmares. I had the creepy pleasure of seeing Lore’s sold-out podcast tour this summer, and from the throngs of fans in the audience it was clear that the Lore spook machine would soon be spilling into houses everywhere like a soupy gray fog.  And so it has. The podcast has since been adapted to television thanks to Amazon Prime, where millions more will no doubt view it worldwide.

But Angelenos can now have one special piece of the Lore universe all to themselves. The brave can experience a limited-time Lore experience at Magic Box LA  in Downtown LA through November 12.

Handlers guide groups of eight brave souls at a time inside this deftly imagined universe that can best be  described as walking around in a delightfully disturbing nightmare. Although there are live actors inside, it’s not a haunted house. You’ll be an active participant in multi-sensory stories — all rooted in history — that are marvelously acted all around you. Be prepared to be touched (a lot), have secrets whispered in your ear that will stick with you long past your bedtime and to be occasionally separated from your group (Example: I spent a few daunting minutes in seance while my husband was in an insane asylum with a child murderer!). You know, just the usual LA evening! (ha)

To say much more would be to spoil the fun, but there are plenty of tricks and treats for longtime Lore fans. Tickets start at $65 and can be purchased at CreepLA.com. And if you miss the experience or don’t live in LA, make sure to catch the show and download the podcast.

Catch Creep LA at 1933 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA, 90007; with entrance to Creep LA: Lore located at 1986 Hill St, Los Angeles, CA, 90007.
