When one of the world’s biggest names in luxury fashion gets a nip and tuck, all eyes are on the results. And last weekend, the Louis Vuitton flagship on Rodeo Drive gave everyone something to talk about with its new look. After a year-long makeover, the brand unveiled an airy and bright store that showcases history, heritage and the new direction that creative director Nicolas Ghesquière is bringing to the world’s most recognizable name.

Designed by Peter Marino, the architectural maestro behind many of the LVMH labels’ retail spaces, the new store is akin to stepping right into one of steamer trunks that made Vuitton so famous in the past (think wood accents, cream carpets and plush seating). Combined with Ghesquière’s new avant garde vision for Vuitton, the space blends old and new, indoor and outdoor and sets the perfect stage for the brand’s accessories, menswear and women’s ready-to-wear. Natural light floods the new store, which is in stark contrast to the old location, thanks to huge windows and white fabric tiles that give the illusion of outdoor space. The store’s exterior combination of stainless steel ribbons and louvers also play with the light, casting huge shadows and angles inside and outside the new space.

The first thing that greets shoppers in the new Vuitton store is Los Angeles-based artist Aaron Curry’s work Fritz, a hot pink homage to the energy and fun of Southern California. And right in the entranceway to the boutique is Peter Rogiers’ Ghostwriter, a tangle of steel meant to evoke a Santa Ana palm. The first story of the shop is also home to accessories and Vuitton’s “rare and exceptional” pieces, constructed from exotic skins including limited runs of classic shapes and new Ghesquière crations in ostrich, crocodile and lizard. There’s also a limited edition Chain Louise bag featuring a silver clasp which is meant to mirror the stainless steel façade of the Rodeo Drive shop that’s only available at this location.

Rodeo Drive’s flagship is also the first location in Southern California to offer a Haute Maroquinerie salon, where shoppers can customize five different classic Louis Vuitton styles in different colors and materials. There’s no limit to the creativity and the price, which can climb as shoppers browse through different colors, textures and exotic leathers. Currently, only four locations in America offer the service.

Upstairs, men’s ready-to-wear — designed by Kim Jones — is on the second floor alongside writing implements and a custom shoe salon. The third floor, however, is where you’ll find women’s ready-to-wear collection and the special VIP room (a standard addition to any Rodeo Drive flagship). From the VIP suite, guests are treated to panoramic views of Beverly Hills, a terrace and a direct view of the Hollywood sign. It’s sure to attract the city’s brightest stars and biggest spenders.

Louis Vuitton is located at 295 N. Rodeo Drive, in Beverly Hills. For more information, visit www.louisvuitton.com.
