Outfit Inspiration: Jessica Alba’s MTV Movie Awards Crop Top

Just when we think red carpet dressing has gotten stale and predictable (jewel tones, strapless gowns, princess silhouettes? Yawn.), the MTV Movie Awards come around and we’re reminded that not every red carpet is a black tie affair. Case in point? Jessica Alba’s sunny, sweet crop top and flared skirt combo. She may be a Dame to Kill For, but we’d kill to have her killer year-round glow and fearless fashion sense, especially when she’s got on an outfit as great as this one.

Crop tops have been trending for a few seasons now, but now that it’s summertime and music festival season, they’re a full-blown seasonal phenomenon. Alba’s not the first to take the trend to the red carpet. Lately, we’ve seen Taylor Swift strut down the ACM Awards and there were more than just Alba’s abs on display at the MTV Movie Awards. To get the look, we’ve found a daring-yet-demure crop top, a great skirt and more that you can add to your summer wardrobe to look as white hot as the Sin City star.

While crop tops aren’t for the faint of heart — it takes big style cajones to wear anything that reveals a little more than usual — Alba’s tiny tube top is definitely not something you can wear on the daily. Instead, try the slightly more conservative  Bailey 44 Mailbu Bailey Crop Top ($71). It’s still got the cropped length that’s on trend, but it’s a little more covered up to a high-necked tank silhouette. Paired with something high waisted (jeans or a skirt, since this top’s simple shape lends itself to just about anything), it’ll show just a peek of skin, keeping you classy and not veering into Britney Spears’ low-slung hip hugger days. Trends come back, but we’re not quite ready for a full-on ’00s Brit-brit revival just yet.

1. Whether you’re showing a lot of skin or just a peek, it’l always look better with a little bit of a glow. The St. Tropez Tanning Essentials Skin Illuminator in Gold ($22.50) takes all the guesswork out of going faux, giving you instant bronzed skin with just a hint of shimmer that applies streak-free and washes off in the shower.

2. Alba is carrying her good friend Narciso Rodriguez’s charitable Bottletop clutch, but you can get the same look with the Rebecca Minkoff Owen Flat Stud Envelope Clutch ($295). It’s textured, makes a big statement and is big enough for all your essentials and more.

3. Get the look of Alba’s textured black and white heels with the Rachel Roy Alta High Heel Pointed Toed Pumps ($220). Blending black and white snake, it’s a bold shoe that you can pair with all your wardrobe staples.

4. And while Alba went for a whole lot of voluminous va-va-voom, something a little more tailored such as the Halston Heritage Ponte Flared Skirt ($245) is perfect for work or play. It might not pack the punch of a neon yellow, but it’s sure to make a statement with its bold shape, even if you’re pairing it with a simple tank top.
