It was a Technicolor dream come true last night at the Kohn Gallery in Hollywood where designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais celebrated the one-year anniversary of their move to Los Angeles with the launch of their new Wolk Morais line.

The resort collection aptly titled, “LA New Look,” was a vibrant showing of bright ‘60s-inspired shifts, digital silk prints on blouses and coordinating separates, bubbly boucle dresses and jackets and gowns that all celebrated L.A.’s sunny outlook and media roots.

The looks were punctuated with whimsical hand-sculpted and hand-painted Brontosaurus headbands and hats from Montez of The Millinery Guild, frames from L.A. Eyeworks and patent leather Dr. Scholl’s. (Welcome back, good Dr.)

The two, who formerly helmed the New York-based Ruffian clothing line, moved to L.A. one year ago to soak up SoCal’s bright style influences and infuse them into a label inspired by a city gilded with the history of Old Hollywood, oozing with the excitement of Young Hollywood, a vibrant art scene, buzzed-about restaurants and a style all its own.

“I think that L.A. is having a renaissance,” said Brian Wolk backstage. “I think there’s a cultural consciousness, a renaissance going on right now that’s really exciting. There’s a movement of artists, a movement of designers. I think there’s an underground culture. There’s room for creativity and we’re completely in love with the city.”

The duo collaborated with Elizabeth Stewart to style the line, which is designed, sourced and manufactured in L.A. Recently the pair dressed Jessica Chastain, one of Stewart’s A-list clients.

“We’re really inspired by the artists who showed at Ferris Gallery during the 1960s here in Los Angeles,” said Wolk. “There were a lot of these minimalist painters here in Los Angeles in the 1960s and we were really inspired by that color palette and modernism in the ‘60s as well as the glamour of old Hollywood.”

While the clothes were bright and cheery, the venue and guests could have easily been mistaken for a downtown gallery show during NY fashion week, with a sea of notable guests from both the fashion and art scene clad in black sitting in benches set up around the perimeter of the famous gallery, known for championing contemporary artists from both coasts.

Fittingly, the attendees tuning in to the technicolor channel were also a bicoastal mix. Rose McGowan, sporting her chic pixie, Elizabeth Stewart, Magda Berliner, George Kotsiopoulos, Cameron Silver, and art scene notables Kyle Dewoody and Carlton Dewoody mingled withLisa Smilor and Steven Kolb of the CFDA who were in town from New York.

“I didn’t know [Wolk Morais] were showing and someone tweeted it or something and we were like ‘Can we come to the show?’” said Kolb. “We miss them in New York, but we’re really happy for them here.”

Kolb, who was also in town for the CFDA/Popsugar luncheon at Coachella last weekend, as well as hosting and attending bevy of other events, including a meeting with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, appeared to be in town in an ambassadorial capacity as well.

So might we be seeing more involvement from CFDA on the West Coast?

“We want to do more on the West Coast and I think that now’s the time,” Kolb said.
