All Fired Up: Our Candle Picks for Mother’s Day Gifting

It’s hard to get fired up over a candle, especially now that every mall emporium, and even convenience store, has a selection of them. But we’ve scoured the world of wicks and brought together a selection of stunning candles that might just be too pretty to burn. Resist the urge to keep these candles pristine though, because unless you light one up, you won’t be able to use the chic snuffer that we’ve included. From extremely cute to extortionately priced, there’s something for mom no matter what her scent or style.

MOR Marshmallow Candle

MOR Marshmallow Candle

From Australian company MOR, the Marshmallow Candle ($49) comes poured in a petite teacup (which can be re-used after the candle is burned out), meaning it’s not just perfect for Mother’s Day, but also for bridal showers, birthdays and just about any other occasion. Made with a lead-free wick and smooth-burning soy-based wax, the candles boast an impressive scent throw and 22 hours of burn time.

They’re perfect for gifting, so we’d recommend stocking up on this little wonder in case you’ve got an unexpected occasion, need a last-minute hostess gift or want to give mom a whole tea service for her special day.

F.S.C. Barber Candle

F.S.C. Barber Candle

If mom’s not into frills and flowers, the F.S.C. Barber Candle ($55) is a cheeky surprise. Freemans Sporting Club, the super popular old-school barbershop, has released a candle that blends outdoor scents like cypress, sandalwood and galbanium with clean barbershop notes of lime and thyme. Poured into shatter-proof enamel made by one of America’s oldest enamel manufacturers, it’s ideal for moms who are more into power tools than powder puffs. And this is one candle that dad won’t mind lighting up either.

Available at Freemans Sporting Club locations in New York, San Francisco and online at shop.freemanssportingclub.com

Jo Malone Candles

Jo Malone Candles

If mom already wears a Jo Malone fragrance, there’s no better pairing to her perfume than a candle ($65) in a matching (or complementary) scent. Available in 13 scents, they have the same  best-selling fragrances, from Grapefruit, Vanilla & Anise, Red Roses and newer releases like Wild Bluebell and Pomegranate Noir. They’re also available in travel size ($35) and a truly decadent luxury four-wick size ($400).

Diptyque Curiosities Scented Candle

Diptyque Curiosities Scented Candle

You’ve seen Diptyque signature candles burning in the world’s chicest boutiques, but new from the luxe French brand is the Curiosités Scented Candle ($80). Part of their limited edition 34 Boulevard Saint Germain collection to celebrate the brand’s 50 years in business, it’s an enigmatic blend of paper, charcoal, amber and old wood.

As with their other candles, the container’s too pretty to toss after burning (if you can bear to bring flame to something so beautiful), especially with the Dionysian accent and minimalistic white cast. Don’t say we didn’t warn you — some candles are just too pretty to use.

Available at Diptyque boutiques and www.diptiqueparis.com

Cire Trudon Candles

Cire Trudon Candles

If mom’s not feeling Diptyque’s high intellectuality and minimal MO, she’ll appreciate the history and tradition behind Cire Trudon Candles ($80). Candlemaker to royalty, including Marie Antoinette, they’ve got a pedigree that no other brand can touch. And on the hush hush, they’re also the manufacturer candles for high-end high-fashion brands like Guerlain, Chanel and Hermès.

To up their luxury ante, their glass vessels are all made by artisans in Vinci, Italy, and all their wax-blending and scent-crafting techniques have changed little from their 17th-century roots. Scents are inspired by everything from the French countryside to Marie Antoinette’s provincial Petit Trianon “cottage” in Versailles to NASA moon dust (not everything’s old school). Also available are slow-melting busts of Marie “let them eat cake” Antoinette, luxury-sized $450 candles and “stink bombs,” chic explosives that fill any room with a cerebral Cire Trudon scents when you toss them to the ground. We think that’s the bomb, if you will.

Available at Cire Trudon boutiques, Barneys and select retailers

Fornasetti Candle

Fornasetti Candle

Not to be outdone, Italian designer Fornasetti’s candles have been pushing the boundaries of modern candle making. Their candles ($165) are massive objet d’art, featuring everything from spliced portraits of Lina Cavalieri in a not-so-classic Italian style, Dada-esque splatters of lips and curious owl prints. They’ve also eschewed traditional clean, light scents for a signature heady blend of spice, warmth and amber. Made of natural wax, the burn so cleanly the company boasts that you won’t even have to clean them out when you re-use the vessels. And when mom does re-use them (we’d recommend a quick rinse, no matter what they say), you’ll have the chicest cookie jar around.

Available at select retailers and shop.leclaireur.com

Elsa Peretti Padova candle snuffer

Elsa Peretti Padova Candle Snuffer

Whether your favorite candle is a maximalist Fornasetti or a minmal Malone, there’s no better way to extinguish the flame than with a sleek snuffer. Tiffany’s long-time collab with Elsa Peretti offers a super sleek, simple sterling silver snuffer ($340) that’s too pretty to keep in a drawer. Setting it beside any of your candles won’t just remind you not to blow your bougies, but to simply snuff the flame with a quick flick of the wrist. You don’t spend big bucks just to blow wax all over your bureau, after all.

Available at Tiffany boutiques and www.tiffany.com
