We Worked Out With Jillian Michaels (& Survived to Tell the Tale!)

Jillian Michaels at L.A.s IDEA World Fitness Convention

Jillian Michaels at L.A.’s IDEA World Fitness Convention

Jillian Michaels may be #AmericasFavoriteTrainer, but after experiencing BODYSHRED, her latest fitness class at Los Angeles’ IDEA World Fitness Convention, she’s proving to be one of America’s toughest, too. The Biggest Loser coach, soon-to-be reality television star and SpikeTV host and judge led a class of almost 600 fitness fanatics at the expo, giving each and everyone a taste of Bodyshred, the latest way to experience a Jillian Michaels’ workout.

Bodyshred takes Michaels’ off of the television and right into the gym. That’s right, while we’re devotees of her DVD library (30 Day Shred is a pre-vacay necessity), Michaels is giving gymgoers a chance to get in on the action, too. Bodyshred, which began last year, is expanding across North America and coming to gyms all over. Most fitness fads can trace their roots to L.A. or New York, but because Michaels is all about fitness for all, she’s bringing Bodyshred to gyms from coast to coast.

What sets it apart? We found out during the workout that Michaels’ signature 3-2-1 format is still in tact. The 3 minutes of strength training followed by 2 minutes of cardio and a minute of abs were the only thing we recognized, however. Michaels added new moves — some compound, which means they work multiple muscle groups simultaneously — to keep things fresh. And since Bodyshred is in gyms and not in your living room, we had plenty of motivation from Michaels and the fellow fitness fans we were working out with. The result? Plenty of sweat and sore muscles as the entire room was punching, pumping out push-ups and getting caught up in Michaels’ blend of hardcore, results-driven fitness and no-nonsense motivation. The 30-minute workout was anything but easy and we can’t wait to see how the individual trainers add their own spin to it at their local fitness centers.

The preview was aimed at fitness professionals, who can get certified to be an official Bodyshred trainer, but the room was full of Michaels devotees, too. You could see why. Michaels took the stage and commanded the room, explaining just how each exercise could be modified for different fitness levels and how even the most seasoned athletes would have trouble getting through the hardcore workout. It’s that accessibility and honesty that’s earned Jillian a veritable army of loyal fans. And as we cooled down after the workout (drenched in sweat, by the way) it was evident why: we were exhausted and exhilarated. For a workout that’s aimed at maximum results in minimal time, we felt like we’d been pulled through the ringer. But because of Michaels’ infectious attitude, we couldn’t wait to do it all over again.
