Monday Muse: Jenni Kayne Goes Glamping

“Lifestyle brand” gets thrown around a lot — especially these days. But if you head to any of Jenni Kayne’s stores, you’ll see that the SoCal designer has managed to create one that’s about more than just a pair of slip-on mules. The shops feature home goods, special offerings from brands like the Laundress and Earth Tu Face as well as Kayne’s ever-growing collection of ready-to-wear and accessories. Her knits, shoes, and spins on traditional shirting are what bring in the bread and butter, but her customers (both old and new) aren’t afraid to try something new, especially if it has the Kayne stamp of approval — and, by default, the stamp of approval from her pals Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessicas Alba and Biel, and more.

For pre-fall, the designer imagined a chic camping trip — glamping, if you will. It was unexpected, considering the collection was packed with filmy slip dresses, bandeau tops, and button-front shorts. Kayne added a bit of hard-edged elegance with the addition of covetable outerwear, especially the pieces done in a bold buffalo check and riffs on military anoraks.

Kayne imagined her girl going for a brisk walk in Big Sur or among the Sierra Nevadas right as she woke up, just tossing on a topper right over her midcentury nighty. That narrative might not be that believable (especially with the cool temps in our forecast), but it did make for an idyllic fantasy. And considering that we’ve all just survived the hectic holidays, the idea of getting off the grid for a few days was alluring, to say the least. The hiking boots and rag socks were a great way to further illustrate the theme, and paired with the collection’s most feminine pieces, it was a way to mix things up that we’re sure to see out in the real world.

Kayne’s lifestyle brand, which extends beyond clothes to her blog (which covers cooking, motherhood, and more), Instagram, and other social-media outlets, is sure to appeal to more than just the California girls (and the California girls at heart), since she’s incorporating green living into her fashion sphere. It’s an exciting time to be a Kayne girl, just be ready to see a lot more when you’re out and about, whether you’re in the Catskills or the concrete jungle.
