Alexander Wang has always had big ideas. His conceptual designs have taken inspiration from fabric and fabric manipulation and his stores have art spaces inside them, each change meriting press coverage and commentary from shoppers and critics alike. But for his Pre-Fall 2015 collection, Wang decided to pare down his big concepts and instead of creating heat-sensitive dresses or blacklight-activated patterns, he gave us all clothes that we want to wear.
Wang also made headlines with the news of his new denim line, and that utilitarian ethos is where his Pre-Fall 2015 collection began. The denim, which will be in stores right about now, focuses on new fabrications and technology that resists unwanted fading and stretching, is sure to be spotted on street style stars in the coming months, especially with the provocative ads that came along with the announcement.
And denim, at its root, is workwear, which is what Wang riffed on for pre-fall. Mens’ staples, uniforms and military regalia all showed up in the collection, though the fabrics were decidedly feminine and the cuts had Wang’s signature sex written all over them. Bomber jackets were rendered in deep aubergine, bags were stripped of hardware flourishes and instead boasted utilitarian pockets and long shoulder straps.
Shapes were boxier than the norm for Wang, but that’s probably because of his inspiration. Guys’ loungewear and uniforms aren’t necessarily the sexiest jumping off point, but when details such as shawl lapels on a robe dress or the lacing of a flight suit on a slip dress gave little peeks of skin here and there that Wang’s customers have come to expect.
And we’re not saying that Wang’s wild side has been tamed once and for all, but he did include a small collection of evening wear in the collection — a first for the line — after retailers across the country and world were practically begging for it. The designs were done in black and white and featured sleek lines and slivers of skin. Unarguably chic, it expanded the Wang lexicon, which is now approaching the tipping point of becoming a full-blown lifestyle line. After his collaboration with H&M, his athleisure-tinged T by Alexander Wang line and now his evening wear, it’s only a matter of time until we’re burning Alexander Wang candles, surrounded by Alexander Wang furniture and loving every minute of it.
