When it comes to far-off places, and especially North Africa, Morocco and Egypt get the bulk of attention from the art world, but this year’s resort collection has introduced us to the beauty and exotic allure of Tunisia, which just so happens to be where BCBG’s Max Azria was born. The collection that he and his wife Lubov showed for resort was inspired by the seaside town of Hammamet, the beachy hamlet that not only gave us Max himself, but also played muse to artist Paul Klee and designer Elsa Schiaparelli.

“My husband, Max, is Tunisian,” Lubov Azria told Vogue.“So we wanted to go back and look at where he came from, by really juxtaposing the old and the new.”

BCBG is known for blending boho influences with California cool and the latest trends, so in a season where motifs such as marinière stripes and Bardot reign supreme year after year, the Coachella-ready layered pieces that Max and Lubov showed for the brand were a refreshing take on resort. There were plenty of breezy, airy dresses to wear on vacation or to your local farmer’s market a la the Los Angeles celeb set, but what stood out the most were the layered pieces that you could wear on their own.

The collection included a zippered vest that you could wear as as a dress or on its own. Layer that piece over flowing palazzo pants and you’d be set for a night out. Of course, the Mediterranean influences came through on intricate embroideries (on tunics you could wear as cover-ups at the beach and on badass bomber jackets, spiked, studded and embellished from top to bottom) as well as the white and neutral colors that shot through with bold blues and more.

A less expected note that ran through the collection was the touch of tomboy. Lubov Azria admitted that she loved the look of a woman in a man’s shirt, so she offered a collarless version in the collection embroidered down the front, but she also threw in banker striped blouses, faux-wrap skirts in stiff oxford cloth and more (capes were a standout) in menswear materials that skirted the masculine/feminine line with ease.

Boho babes will love the hammam-inspired terry pieces, which added plenty of texture to the embroidery-heavy collection. And naturally, because L.A.’s influence is irresistible even halfway around the world, there were red carpet gowns that begged for just a few flashbulbs.
