When it comes to perfectly placed prints and digital design, few labels have the sartorial savvy of L.A.’s Clover Canyon. Designer Rozae Nichols has created a niche for her brand, which specializes in lust-worthy pieces that integrate photorealistic prints, classic shapes and bright, bold color that’s perfect for off-duty A-listers, Hollywood’s PYTs and the flashbulb set. For Fall 2014, Nichols brought the brand back to its roots, drawing from the culture of her great-grandmother’s roots in Ireland.

Looking at Clover Canyon’s over-the-top patterns in the context of technicolor tartans and clashing plaids makes us wonder why it took three seasons for Nichols to draw from the bank of imagery and iconography of Ireland. Touchstones for the collection included Oscar Wilde, stained glass windows and the Book of Kells in addition to fantasy staples such as unicorns and fairies (we didn’t spot any leprechauns, but we hear they’re wily creatures). In the past, customers have come to Nichol’s Clover Canyon for standout frocks and special occasion dresses, but as the brand has grown, Nichols has added tailored pieces and work-appropriate basics that are injected with her signature prints, elevating the mundane to magical.

The Fall 2014 collection included library prints, tartans superimposed with floral flourishes and mixed media skirts that blended wool and lace. Trompe-l’oeil dresses blended draped curtains with fields of wildflowers  and rainbows, creating a fantasy of just-after-the-rain wonderlands. Heraldic symbols, coats of arms and ribbons that recalled equestrian motifs also decorated tops and cocktail dresses and long lean striped worked their way down tunics and pants. No matter the print, however, Nichols showcased her ability to carve curves and accentuate the body with perfectly pieces colors and pattern, giving her loyal customer base more reason to join in on this highland hike. And while we love this retooling of the classic references of her family, we can’t wait to see just what Nichols has up her print perfect sleeve when she lands back home in California.
