Monday Muse: Erin Fetherston’s Enchanting, Polished Pixies

Erin Fetherston Fall 2015

Erin Fetherston Fall 2015

San Francisco girl Erin Fetherston has a clear point of view, which is something brands need to stand out from the rest — especially during the crowded calendar at Fashion Week. Fetherston has built her brand on pretty dresses, sweet confections and romantic gowns. She’s the go-to for girls who want a bit of a fairy tale every time that they get dressed. It might seem that she’s sewn herself into a corner, but the truth is, like the most established designers in the game (ahem, Ralph Lauren), Fetherston riffs on her house codes season after season, showing fresh takes on her fairy tale togs. For Fall 2015, she brought everything back home, right back to the street she grew up on. Wildwood, the collection’s title, contained plenty of princess-ready styles that looked perfectly fresh for the real world, too.

The colors were straight out of Grimm’s Fairy Tales: mossy greens, bold red and blackberry as well as Fetherston’s signature ivories and soft gold. She kept her fabrics in the realm of fantasy, too, with plenty of velvet, satin and light-as-air lace overlays that gave peeks to layers beneath — the underpinnings were all from Fetherston’s ongoing collab with lingerie brand Cosabella.

And while hemlines and shapes were long and sweet — Fetherston’s not going to stray from her signatures anytime soon — the collection took a darker and more mysterious turn with the addition of swirling embroideries, intricate embellishments and more that made the models look like nymphs emerging from the forest. Romance was pressent too, in poet sleeves, paper bag waists and body-con jumpsuits cut in lace. Fetherston’s sweet and girly looks might seem cliché to some shoppers, but for a certain type of girl — ahem, Taylor Swift — she strikes the perfect balance of prim and proper without veering into dowdy territory. And that balance keeps her fans coming back for more.
