Monique Lhuillier Pre-Fall 2017
Like many designers, Los Angeles-based Monique Lhuillier uses pre-fall and resort to experiment. Later, in her spring and fall collections, small details get fleshed out, one-off embellishments appear all over a gown, and what looks like a whim can become a brand signature. Case in point: Lhuillier’s evening tops with flowing trains. They’ve made several awards show appearances (most notably on Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland) and have become a seasonal staple for Lhuillier. Her coterie of fangirls can’t get enough.
For pre-fall 2017, the designer took a trip to Spain and brought back a few souvenirs for those trailing tops, her signature red carpet gowns and, unexpectedly, a whole range of separates that are sure to cater to a whole new group of customers.

The Spanish spice emerged via ruffles, a shocking electric hot pink, boleros, and an undercurrent of flamenco for day and night. Lhuillier will always be known as a designer that caters to special occasions, but with the addition of separates to every collection, she’s got plenty to offer. Pleated cigarette pants, statement-making jackets, and unexpected takes on shirting and blouses are great for the ladies who lunch set — though done up with point d’esprit, it could be a way to subvert those twinsets, too. Black and white were big players — a great way to showcase that pink — and details that ran through the collection included big bows, structural pieces (shoulders were a big emphasis), and texture came via matte and shine, velvet and lace, and sculpted silk. We saw a few florals that will surely be featured in fall 2017’s collection. Lhuillier’s playful side is coming to the forefront. And with formality taking a back seat, the line has never felt more fresh.
