Rebecca Minkoff might be more about bags than her ready-to-wear (let’s not forget about her jewelry, tech accessories, wearable tech collabs and more, which often steal the spotlight), but that might be about to change. And while her clothes are already favorite among the street style set — just see Man Repeller for evidence of that — it’s been hard to pin down a clear vision for her line. For resort, Minkoff had a clear inspiration, and it seemed, a new direction for the future of RM RTW. Inspired by the cover of Formidable from 1966 and its iconic snap of François Hardy, Minkoff went full on New Wave tomboy.
The French mag has been a touchstone for many a designer, but Minkoff’s edgy designs and fearless attitude made for a collection that Hardy would undoubtedly wear. Good thing it’s a look that translates perfectly to 2015: each piece was more covetable than the last.

Minkoff’s resort was filled with mod-inspired shirt dresses, kicky flares and wear-with-everything booties. Culled straight from Nouvelle Vague staples, the collection was a mashup of bohemia and Mod, making for pieces that real women, not just those yearning for a street style snap, will want to wear. The collection had all the hallmarks of Hardy’s style: it was polished and unfussy, but completely chic. Pop art designs showed up to add splashes of color and pattern among the mostly black-and-white separates (what’s more Parisian than that?) and Minkoff offered up simple shapes such as t-shirts and shifts in luxe fabrics such as buttery suede and glossy leather. If there is one piece that does come close to being a Minkoff trademark, it’s the biker jacket, and it was re-interpreted with bold white lapels and an brash white zipper. It’s something to snatch up quickly — it’s sure to sell out.

And while some designers can take the Mod movement and offer up costumey collections, there was nothing dated about Minkoff’s ponchos, minis and yes, her bags. When her largest store to date opens up in L.A. this fall, it’ll be stocked with these goods, and while we can’t wait to see what techy innovations she has in store for SoCal, we’re also waiting to get our hands on these textured crossbodies, tasseled clutches and sleek hobos. While her signature styles, such as the Affair and the MAB, will always be on offer, it’s the seasonal offerings that really catch our attention. Boxy camera bags, saddle shapes that beg for transatlantic sojourns and clean mini backpacks will stick around longer than a few of the label’s past styles. That is, if you can get your hands on them. Minkettes are known for their rabid love of the label, so you’ve got some stiff competition to snatch up the bags — and the ready to wear.
