Over three decades into his career in fashion, it’s easy to forget that Tadashi Shoji was a painter before he sent his first looks down a runway. So, it’s not surprising when the red-carpet regular takes inspiration from painters and artists from around the world — and throughout history, too. We’ve seen him touch on Henri Rousseau, Monet, and more. But for resort, French post-Impressionist Pierre Bonnard’s colorful landscapes and quirky portraiture inspired the sweet florals and modern cuts in Tadashi’s resort collection.

Tadashi has built his reputation on dressing major stars for red-carpet events, but it’s important to remember that many real-life women are fans of his work, too. Those women might gravitate towards shorter hems and more relaxed shapes, such as long, breezy shirtdresses and A-line frocks. Shoji added pleats and sheer panels to dresses to mimic the dreamy, saturated paintings that inspired the collection. Having done much of his work from memory, Bonnard’s work is marked by a dreamy, etherial quality, which is Tadashi through and through.

Tadashi may be associated more with women of a certain age, but the designer is doing his best to change that conception. For the past few seasons, we’ve seen him embrace more youthful shapes and colors — and this resort collection is no different. The Insta generation will surely be drawn to photogenic frocks done in black macramé overlay with lace-up detailing and plunging necklines. Plus, off-the-shoulder picks done in nudes and 3-D floral appliqué are basically begging to be hashtagged and shared. They’ll come in for the cutouts and sheer panels, but the flattering cuts and easy sophistication will keep them coming back season after season.
