Backstage Beauty: Rag & Bone and Zero + Maria Cornejo

While Rag & Bone is known for its tailoring and staples, the boys behind R&B went beyond basics for spring. To reflect that notion, the hair and makeup was more relaxed and fun. “Very simple hair with a mid-’90s vibe,” said Guido Palau. He used the Sultra Sophisticate Power Dryer and the brand new Wicked Gold Decadence Iron to give the models a sleek downtown look (true to the Rag & Bone DNA) while softening her with just a little crinkle. After all, no downtown girl is ever too polished. He finished the look with a band around models’ necks, giving them impromptu ponytails. Revlon’s Gucci Westman was inspired by surfers, and while the collection featured bright teals and yellows, the makeup was simple. Peach lips and a face that glowed with summer’s heat were the perfect compliment to that healthy beaming surfer girl that seemed to embody the ’90s.

At Zero + Maria Cornejo, the team from Beauty.com handled the ornate origami-inspired hair and tougher, matte-finish nails. “It’s like ribbon candy hair,” said Jenna Muller, the spokesperson for Phyto for Beauty.com. “It’s folded and very intricate, giving the illusion of short hair.” Cornejo wanted the hair up off of the clothes (having it down would be too literal, she said) and the clothes needed some hardness to balance their soft drapes and lines. On nails, Butter London for Beauty.com supplied Cornejo with two colors. Hen Party, a sheer, iridescent nude, was used on fingers but finished with a layer of Matte Finish. We loved the iridescent effect after the matte topcoat, but what really caught our eye was the model’s toes, polished with Cheeky Chops, a summery pastel yellow. Shiseido’s Dick Page prepared models with a completely matte face, giving the eyes and cheeks all the sparkle. Using Shiseido’s new Shimmering Cream Eye Colors, he added subtle radiance to the eye area and placed a rosy cheek color high on the orbital bone, almost blending it with the eyes. Lips were almost nude, with just a slick of Shiseido’s new Shimmering Rouge formula in Butterscotch (look for it in Spring 2012).
