Take a Bow: Our Favorite Marc Jacobs Looks from Vuitton

Sixteen years, countless looks, a myriad of iconic pieces and a legacy that will be hard to uphold: those are the things Marc Jacobs is leaving with his departure from French fashion giant Louis Vuitton. While he was there, he transformed the image of the brand, taking it from a stuffy brand more closely associated with luggage and middle aged women than the world of high fashion. There are plenty of looks that we won’t forget, such as the Scarlett Johansson-modeled bow dress, the Madonna rabbit ears, the Sprouse graffiti and more. But something we looked forward to every season — in addition to the clothes that walked the runway — was catching a glimpse of what Marc himself would be wearing. From his famous pajamas to his utility kilt, we’ve gathered together our favorite looks from the designer’s closing bows.

Early on at his Vuitton post, Jacobs wasn’t the buffed, bronzed, tattooed designer we know today. In 2006, he was still rocking his post-Perry Ellis grunge look with floppy hair, Harry Potter glasses and relaxed fit pants. A far cry from the guy we know today, but for a while, this was the Marc that everyone knew and loved.

Memorable runway moment: this was the season that Jacobs combined the technicolor logos of the Murikami collection with rainbow fringe and dangling charms.

A few seasons later, we all caught a glimpse of the new and improved Marc Jacobs: kissed by the Brazilian sun and floppy hair buzzed short. His eponymous collection for Spring 2008 was inspired by the colors of Spongebob Squarepants — and it garnered quite a few not-so-positive reviews, so he fired back by carrying a custom Vuitton case complete with a digital image of the cartoon character.

With an ’80s inspired collection that was full of brash colors, peekaboo lace and thigh-high boots done up in everything from gold crinkled leather to shiny black patent, Jacobs kept it simple with a look he adopted for quite some time: Doc Marten boots and an all-black ensemble featuring a kilt. He lost the tan and his scruff showed some signs of greying, but this was one of his most youthful collections for Vuitton ever.

Memorable runway moment: to counter the seriousness of a few looks, Jacobs outfitted models with rabbit ears, which would later be seen on Madonna at the Met Gala.

In 2012, Jacobs made a complete turn from his all-black look with an all-white ensemble. The look mirrored the runway show that preceded him, which featured an all-white carousel and super-girly clothes that featured feathers, frills and white beading. Jacobs showed that he could be a romantic and turn off his hard-edged grunge tendencies. The collection was a hit, and so was Jacobs’ new look.

After the grandiose displays of the carousel and the train, Marc showed his Fall 2013 collection in what looked like the hallway of a chic Parisian hotel. After the show, he made his bow in a multicolor, floral pajama set. The show centered around the boudoir, so it was only natural that Jacobs would take his bow in the after-dark staple. Luxe? Naturally — not everyone can spend their days lounging in their pajamas.
